Simple Guides for New Students

January 5, 2009

Firstly, we would like to congratulate you on successfully receiving an offer to pursue your education in Adelaide. Adelaide is a fun and exciting city to live and study in and we look forward to meeting you here! As such, we have compiled a ‘preparation list’ to get you ready for Adelaide!

Documents
Generally, there are four basic but essential documents that you MUST carry with you at all times during your arrival in Adelaide. They are:
1. Passport
2. A copy of your visa
3. Confirm of Enrolment (CoE) letter
4. Currency (e.g. traveler’s cheque, cash, etc)
Please make sure that these documents are secured in a specific and safe place.

Should I buy winter clothing in Malaysia?
Yes, you can. But just so you know, Adelaide – and Australia, generally – is still experiencing summer. With maximum temperature of 35°C and minimum of 14°C, you shouldn’t have to worry about winter clothing, at least for a month or so.
Our recommendation is: buy winter clothing here. Why? Because thick clothing will consume more space and you could exceed the allocated weight

Can I bring food to Australia?
As you might have known, Australia is very strict with what you can bring into the country.
For information on the type of food that you can bring into Australia, please check the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service.

Where will I live?
Before you come here, your university might offer you with some accommodation options, either permanent or temporary. Of course you can always find one on your own.
The easiest and the most popular option is: book your temporary place in seniors’ houses. It is during this temporary period (one week or so) that you’ll look for your permanent accommodation.

University Accommodation Services
University of Adelaide
University of South Australia
University of Flinders

Other accommodation services
University accommodation services provide useful information and options but they are limited and expensive. Another option you might want to consider as your accommodation is: Adelaide International Village.

You can also rent a house/unit with you friends. The amount that you can expect to pay varies from as little as $60 per week to as much as you can afford! There are many variables that come in play in renting such as distance – the further you are from the city, the cheaper it will be, furnishing – fully furnished house/unit cost more and size – the larger house/unit cost more.
For background information about this, you can survey the price, type of house and the location here.

Your arrival in Adelaide
Every year, almost all of the new Malaysian students arriving in Adelaide will be greeted at the Adelaide International Airport by current students who have arrived here earlier. In addition to this, each university will also provide someone from your university to greet you at the airport. Further information:
Adelaide Uni
UniSA
Flinders Uni

Student Card
During your first visit to your respective university, you should apply for a university student card. With a student card, you can access your university email, personal university page and consequently enrol in related courses. This will be your ID here, so you don’t have to carry your passport around.

Financial Institutions
There are several banks in which you can open a bank account and save your money into. However, depending on your sponsor, there are certain banks that you must go to and open a bank account to enable your sponsor to transfer your monthly allowance.

Welcoming New Students Program
This program is a combined efforts of the Malaysian Students’ Council of Australia, South Australia chapter (MASCA SA), Malaysian Islamic Society of South Australia (MISSA), and Kelab UMNO SA.

The details of the program are as follows:
Date: 7th March 2009 (Saturday)
Venue: Bradford Lodge, Rose Park
Time: 9am – 1pm

If you have any further queries, please forward them to anyone living in Adelaide that you have met before, or contact us via the contact page.

Last but not least, we look forward to meeting you in Adelaide! We hope you will enjoy living in Adelaide just like we have.
