Report: MASCA SA Beach Day 2009

The week was wet prior to the event but it was like the heavens were smiling down on us when Saturday came. The clouds parted and the sunlight shone through and warmed us as we prepared for one joyous day on the beach! It was time for the annual MASCA Beach Day!
The first games that were played were beach soccer and captain ball. The participants were hyped as they stepped onto the playing field or more accurately, playing sand? Despite the need for a better word, the games went on hilariously as people struggled to run on the sand and fell sideways and back, in all manners and form but always picking themselves up, dusting themselves off and laughing along with the merry spirit that filled the air.
As the tournaments ended, participants feasted, ok, not feasted, but snacked on the sandwiches and noodles that the MASCA committee members stayed up all night making. After satisfying their jolly bellies, the participants craved for more fun, “and more fun they shall have!” said the MASCA committee members.
Following the break, the participants were kept busy with games such as Hunchback, suap-suap , Tiup belon sampai pecah, kejar-kejar belon, and Semakin Jauh Semakin Sayang. The participants were very co-operative and we from MASCA thank all of you for your cooperation and also for your enthusiasm. The Kejar-kejar belon was especially exciting. It started with a big group and the participants slyly formed teams to protect each other’s balloons from being stepped on. The game soon looked to be like a silat contest with flamingos as the participants “membuka langkah” and hopped on one foot whilst the spectators laughed their heads off at the weird situation.
As the day progressed and the sun was about to set, the grand finale was set up. There were 4 male teams and 3 female teams competing in this competition. What competition you ask? It was none other that the long awaited tug-of war!
This was the chance for the guys to roll up their sleeves and flex those muscles in desperation to hopefully catch the attention of the chic spectators surrounding them. The muscles tensed and all kinds of faces could be seen, faces that you normally wouldn’t see on these people as they strained to pull not only the rope, but their dignity and also, bragging rights. The competition ended with participants lying on the ground with exhaustion and blistered hands but also, with smiles on their faces.
The prize giving ceremony was then commenced where all the winners were awarded for their enthusiasm and support and what other way to finish a day at the beach than a big group photo as the sun began to set in the horizon.
Overall, it was a fun and unforgettable day thanks to everyone’s cooperation and MASCA SA and particularly the project managers of the event (Mariah and Syafik) would like to thank everyone for coming and helping us etch new memories in our own sands of time.
