Congratulations on successfully receiving an offer to pursue your education in Adelaide. Adelaide is a fun and exciting city to live and study in and we look forward to meeting you here! As such, we have compiled a ‘preparation list’ to get you ready starting a new life in Adelaide!

Documents
Generally, there are four basic but essential documents that you MUST carry with you at all times during your arrival in Adelaide. They are:
1. Passport
2. A copy of your visa
3. Confirm of Enrolment (CoE) letter
4. Currency (e.g. traveler’s cheque, cash, etc)
Please make sure that these documents are secured in a specific and safe place.

Should I buy winter clothing in Malaysia?
Yes, you can. But just so you know, Adelaide – and Australia, generally – is still experiencing summer. With maximum temperature of 35°C and minimum of 14°C, you shouldn’t have to worry about winter clothing, at least for a month or so.
Our recommendation is: buy winter clothing here. Why? Because thick clothing will consume more space and you could exceed the allocated weight

Can I bring food into Australia?
As you might have known, Australia is very strict with what you can bring into the country.
For information on the type of food that you can bring into Australia, please check the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service.

Where will I live?
Before you come here, your university might offer you with some accommodation options, either permanent or temporary. Of course you can always find one on your own.
The easiest and the most popular option is: book your temporary place in seniors’ houses. It is during this temporary period (one week or so) that you’ll look for your permanent accommodation. You may want to start knowing seniors, as this will be a handy experience down the years you are here.

Other accommodation services
University accommodation services provide useful information and options but they are limited and expensive. Another option you might want to consider as your accommodation is: Adelaide International Village.

You can also rent a house/unit with you friends. The amount that you can expect to pay varies from as little as $60 per week to as much as you can afford! There are many variables that come in play in renting such as distance – the further you are from the city, the cheaper it will be, furnishing – fully furnished house/unit cost more and size – the larger house/unit cost more.
For background information about this, you can survey the price, type of house and the location here.

Your arrival in Adelaide
Every year, almost all of the new Malaysian students arriving in Adelaide will be greeted at the Adelaide International Airport by current students who have arrived here earlier. In addition to this, each university will also provide someone from your university to greet you at the airport. Further information:

University of Adelaide
University of South Australia (UniSA)
University of Flinders

Student Card
During your first visit to your respective university, you should apply for a university student card. With a student card, you can access your university email, personal university page and consequently enrol in related courses. This will be your ID here, so you don’t have to carry your passport around.

Financial Institutions
There are several banks in which you can open a bank account and save your money into. However, depending on your sponsor, there are certain banks that you must go to and open a bank account to enable your sponsor to transfer your monthly allowance.

Welcoming New Students Program
This program is now known as ‘Seminar Langkah Bermula’ since the last couple of years. It is a combined efforts of the Malaysian Students’ Council of Australia, South Australia chapter (MASCA SA), Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia, Australia (ISMA), and Kelab UMNO SA.

A date will be chosen for this event and further updates will be posted on our web/facebook/twitter very soon.

If you have any further queries, please forward them to anyone living in Adelaide that you have met before, or contact us via the contact page.

Last but not least, we look forward to meeting you in Adelaide! We hope you will enjoy living in Adelaide just like we have.

Welcome to Adelaide!! Here's some information that you guys got to check it out to start off your year in Adelaide!!!

Adelaide is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of South Australia. It is also the fifth-largest city in Australia with a population of 1.1 million.
Adelaide is located north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, on the Adelaide Plains between the Gulf St Vincent and the low-lying Mount Lofty Ranges. The city stretches 20 km (12 mi) from the coast to the foothills, and 90 km (56 mi) from Gawler at its northern extent to Sellicks Beach in the south.

Adelaide City

The Adelaide city centre is the innermost locality of Greater Adelaide, known by locals simply as “The City” or “Town”. The locality is split into two key geographical distinctions: the city “square mile”, bordered by North, East, South and West Terraces; and that part of the Adelaide Parklands south of the River Torrens which separate the locality’s built form from the surrounding suburbs.

To start off your study life in Adelaide. Here are some information regarding about Adelaide.

Adelaide City Council
The City of Adelaide is a local government area in the metropolitan area of Adelaide, South Australia. It covers the original Adelaide city centre settlement. Established in 1840, the Adelaide City Council is the oldest municipal authority in Australia. At its time of establishment, Adelaide’s (and Australia’s) first mayor, James Hurtle Fisher, was elected. From 1919 onwards, the City has had a Lord Mayor, the current being Michael Harbison.

In its local administrative capacity, the City of Adelaide has responsibility for two areas analogous to suburbs: the Adelaide city centre (also known as the city, the square mile and the CBD) and North Adelaide. The city council is also responsible for the Adelaide Parklands which surround North Adelaide and the city centre.

There are many information provided by the Adelaide City Council regarding about entertainment, shopping, recreation, and maps getting around Adelaide.

Banks

OPENING BANK ACCOUNT

You will be provided with information on banking in South Australia and how to open a bank account when you arrive in Adelaide.

To open a new account with an Australian financial institution, you will be required to provide proof of identity. Australian banks use a points system, and applicants need to provide “100 points” of identification to open an account.

*STUDENTS MUST OBTAINED THEIR STUDENT ID CARD BEFORE OPENING A BANK ACCOUNT IN ANY BANKS

For students wishing to open a STUDENT account with another bank in South Australia, they will need to provide both a passport, and their University student ID card.

Major Banks in Australia:
* ANZ Bank
* Commonwealth Bank of Australia
* BankSA

There are bank branches for most major banks within walking distance of the university, and ATM access is available on campus.

When applying for a bank account, always make sure that you have read and understand the terms and conditions of that account. Enquire about other bank accounts that may be suitable. Ask about the fees and charges, withdrawal limits, and Internet/phone banking options for your account. Remember that all bank accounts are subject to government duties.

Once you have opened a bank account in Adelaide, you can arrange for other funds to be transferred from overseas by International Money Transfer or bank draft.

International credit cards such as MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Diners Club can all be used in Australia. Repayments to most card accounts can be made electronically by phone or Internet, however money usually needs to be transferred from an account within your home country.

Public Transportation

Adelaide Metro is the public transportation system of the South Australian capital of Adelaide. It is an intermodal system with services provided by bus, tram and commuter rail throughout the metropolitan area. The services, although contracted to four separate operators, are fully integrated under Adelaide Metro and share a universal ticketing system, marketing, and common livery and signage.

Each tickets that has been purchased can be used to ride a bus, tram or commuter rail.

Mobile Service Provider
In Australia, there are a few mobile service provider such as Telstra, Optus, Three, Vodafone and Virgin Mobile.

However among all of them, Three is the most optimum choice for students due to a large number of students using it. Nevertheless, other service provider also provide a reasonable “Cap” plan and Prepaid Plan.

Well there you go, these are some information about Adelaide and a few things that you need to start off with when you are living in Adelaide as a student. Hopefully these information will help you out and giving you options on which bank and mobile service provider that you are going to choose.

University of Adelaide
University of South Australia
University of Flinders

Other accommodation services
University accommodation services provide useful information and options but they are limited and expensive. Another option you might want to consider as your accommodation is: Adelaide International Village.

You can also rent a house/unit with you friends. The amount that you can expect to pay varies from as little as $60 per week to as much as you can afford! There are many variables that come in play in renting such as distance – the further you are from the city, the cheaper it will be, furnishing – fully furnished house/unit cost more and size – the larger house/unit cost more.
For background information about this, you can survey the price, type of house and the location here.

Every year, almost all of the new Malaysian students arriving in Adelaide will be greeted at the Adelaide International Airport by current students who have arrived here earlier. In addition to this, each university will also provide someone from your university to greet you at the airport. Further information:

Student Card
During your first visit to your respective university, you should apply for a university student card. With a student card, you can access your university email, personal university page and consequently enrol in related courses. This will be your ID here, so you don’t have to carry your passport around.

Financial Institutions
There are several banks in which you can open a bank account and save your money into. However, depending on your sponsor, there are certain banks that you must go to and open a bank account to enable your sponsor to transfer your monthly allowance.
